Reinforcement learning drone github

A complete code to get you started with implementing Deep Reinforcement Learning in a realistically looking environment using Unreal Gaming Engine and Python. Note 2: A more detailed article on drone reinforcement learning can be found here. Last week, I made a GitHub repository public that contains a stand-alone detailed python code implementing deep reinforcement learning on a drone in a 3D simulated environment using Unreal Gaming Engine.

I decided to cover a detailed documentation in this article. The 3D environments are made on Epic Unreal Gaming engine, and Python is used to interface with the environments and carry out Deep reinforcement learning using TensorFlow. At the end of this article, you will have a working platform on your machine capable of implementing Deep Reinforcement Learning on a realistically looking environment for a Drone.

You will be able to. For this article, the underlying objective will be drone autonomous navigation. There are no start or end positions, rather the drone has to navigate as long as it can without colliding into obstacles. The code can be modified to any user-defined objective.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Drones in 3D realistic environments

The complete simulation consists of three major parts. There are multiple options to select each of these three platforms. But for this article, we will select the following. The rest of the article will be divided into three steps. Following steps can be taken to download get started with these platforms. This given the DNN a better starting point for training and help in convergence. Following link can be used to download the imagenet. Download imagenet.

Install required packages: The provided requirements. Use the following command. This will install the required packages in the activated python environment. Install Epic Unreal Engine: You can follow the guidelines in the link below to install Unreal Engine on your platform. Instructions on installing Unreal engine. Install AirSim: AirSim is an open-source plugin for Unreal Engine developed by Microsoft for agents drones and cars with physically and visually realistic simulations. In order to interface between Python and the simulated environment, AirSim needs to be installed.

It can be downloaded from the link below. Instructions on installing AirSim. Once everything is installed properly, we can move onto the next step of running the code.

Once you have the required packages and software downloaded and running, you can take the following steps to run the code. You can either manually create your environment using Unreal Engine, or can download one of the sample environments from the link below and run it.

This repository uses Transfer Learning TL based approach to reduce on-board computation required to train a deep neural network for autonomous navigation via Deep Reinforcement Learning for a target algorithmic performance. A library of 3D realistic meta-environments is manually designed using Unreal Gaming Engine and the network is trained end-to- end.

These trained meta-weights are then used as initializers to the network in a simulated test environment and fine-tuned for the last few fully connected layers. Variation in drone dynamics and environmental characteristics is carried out to show robustness of the approach.

The drone control system operates on camera images as input and a discretized version of the steering commands as output. The training is performed on the basis of pretrained weights from a supervised learning task, since the simulator is very resource intensive and training is time consuming.

The outcome was discussed within a practical course at the RWTH Aachen, where this agent served as a proof-of-concept, that it is possible to efficiently train an end-to-end deep reinforcement learning model on the task of controlling a drone in a realistic 3D environment.

It is recommended to use version 2. The engine is developed in Python and is module-wise programmable. The engine interfaces with Unreal gaming engine using AirSim to create the complete platform. Figure below shows the complete block diagram of the engine. Unreal engine is used to create 3D realistic environments for the drones to be trained in. Different level of details can be added to make the environment look as realistic or as required as possible.

It provides basic python functionalities controlling the sensory inputs and control signals of the drone. The engine takes input from a config file. This config file is used to define the problem and the algorithm for solving it.

It is algorithmic specific and is used to define algorithm related parameters. More problems and associated algorithms are being added. The most important feature of PEDRA is the high level python modules that can be used as building blocks to implement multiple algorithms for drone oriented applications. The user can either select from the above mentioned algorithms, or can create their own using these building blocks.

In case the user wants to define their own problem and associated algorithm, these building blocks can be used. Once these requirements are set, the simulation can begin. PyGame screen can be used to control simulation parameters such as pausing the simulation, modifying algorithmic or training parameters, overwrite config file and save the current state of the simulation etc.

PEDRA generates a number of output files. The log file keeps track of the simulation state per iteration listing useful algorithmic parameters. The easiest way is to first install python only CNTK instructions.

We will modify the DeepQNeuralNetwork. We can utilize most of the classes and methods corresponding to the DQN algorithm. However, there are certain additions we need to make for AirSim.

This is still in active development. What we share below is a framework that can be extended and tweaked to obtain better performance. Source code.

This example works with AirSimNeighborhood environment available in releases. First, we need to get the images from simulation and transform them appropriately.

Below, we show how a depth image can be obtained from the ego camera and transformed to an 84X84 input to the network. We further define the six actions breaking, straight with throttle, full-left with throttle, full-right with throttle, half-left with throttle, half-right with throttle that an agent can execute. The agent gets a high reward when its moving fast and staying in the center of the lane.

The function isDone determines if the episode has terminated e. We look at the speed of the vehicle and if it is less than a threshold than the episode is considered to be terminated. The main loop then sequences through obtaining the image, computing the action to take according to the current policy, getting a reward and so forth. If the episode terminates then we reset the vehicle to the original state via:. Note that the simulation needs to be up and running before you execute DQNcar.

The video below shows first few episodes of DQN training. This example works with AirSimMountainLandscape environment available in releases. We can similarly apply RL for various autonomous flight scenarios with quadrotors. Below is an example on how RL could be used to train quadrotors to follow high tension power lines e. The reward again is a function how how fast the quad travels in conjunction with how far it gets from the known powerlines.

We consider an episode to terminate if it drifts too much away from the known power line coordinates. Disclaimer This is still in active development.
